Aims of the project: This project will be focused on fundamental studies of preparation and properties of hybrid plasma spray coatings, which is a new class of thermal spray coatings combining deposition of dry coarse powders and liquids (suspensions and solutions). Experiments will be carried out on composite coatings based on ceramics relevant for thermal barriers and wear-resistant layers. High-enthalpy WSP-H plasma torch will be used for depositions. Coatings build-up processes and their basic materials characteristics will be evaluated. Results will be used for iterative spraying process optimization aiming to deliver coatings suitable for more advanced testing. In the case of thermal barriers-relevant coatings, resistance to thermal shocks and high temperature sintering will be evaluated. In the case of wear-relevant coatings, tribological properties will be evaluated. Consecutive evaluation of coatings failure at macroscopic and microscopic level will enable identification of role of miniature liquid-originated splats on overall coatings properties during various modes of loading.
