Kinetic study of boundary plasma in COMPASS and COMPAS-U tokamaks

Seidl | Aims of the project: The understanding of boundary plasma properties represents one of the hottest topics in magnetic-confinement fusion research. Common tools used for this study represent numerical fluid codes. These models can not account for kinetic effects in a self-consistent manner. As it has been demonstrated in recent years, such effects can not be neglected and frequently, they even define the main properties of the boundary plasma. The aim of the proposed project is to develop a fully kinetic model of COMPASS and COMPASS-U tokamak scrape-off layers (SOLs) that will enable self-consistent study of their properties. The newly developed kinetic model will be used to explain different experimental observations made at COMPASS, as well as to perform predictive modeling of the COMPASS-U SOL. The obtained results will help in better understanding of different processes taking place in the tokamak SOL and to optimize plasma discharges at COMPASS-U tokamak.
