Deposition mechanisms and properties of multiphase plasma sprayed coatings prepared with liquid feedstocks

Aims of the project: Plasma spraying with liquid feedstocks (suspensions and solutions) provides coatings with much finer microstructures than conventional plasma spraying with dry coarse powders. Due to the differences in the coating build-up mechanisms, deposition of new types of microstructures with unparalleled properties may be achieved. Hybrid water/argon stabilized plasma (WSP-H)torch developed at Institute of Plasma Physics CAS providing unique high-enthalpy plasma was recently adapted for suspension/solution plasma spraying of ceramic single-layers. In this project, consecutive and concurrent spraying of multiple materials with WSP-H torch will be studied to prepare novel layered, intermixed, and gradient composite coatings with tailored microstructures. Work will be focused on coatings with potential in a) thermal barriers (yttria-stabilized zirconia-based), b) wear-resistant coatings (alumina-based), and c) biocompatible coatings (hydroxyapatite- and titania-based). Materials will be deposited from purely liquid feedstocks and from combination of dry powders and liquids (hybrid coatings).
