Reduction of localised heat loads in divertor of COMPASS tokamak by means of novel active techniques

Aims of the project: One of the key impediments limiting performance of future thermonuclear reactors is the distribution of heat fluxes on the plasma facing components. The incoming heat flux must not exceed material limits of the components, otherwise the compontents suffer damage and their lifetime is drastically reduced. The goal of this project is to investigate experimentally two active techniques to broaden the heat flux deposition pattern and thus alleviate loading of the components. First technique is based on floating divertor tiles, second uses localised gas puff in divertor. Both techniques aim at creating flux tubes at altered plasma potentials, resulting in an ExB drift pushing particles away from the locations of high heat flux. All experiments will be performed in the COMPASS tokamak, which is a highly flexible device allowing rapid development of the techniques. At the same time it can reach relevant plasma conditions (ELMy H-mode).
