Physical aspects of plasma spray deposition from liquid feedstock

Aims of the project: Plasma spraying of liquids is a novel approach used in plasma spraying and enables preparation of nano-structured coatings from nanopowders (suspensions) or in-situ preparation of nanoparticles during spraying (from solutions). Interaction of both types of liquids with high-enthalpic plasma and relation between unique microstructure of the deposits and their properties will be studied. Water-stabilized plasma torch developed at Institute of Plasma Physics AS CR, v.v.i., will be used for plasma generation and will provide plasma significantly different from that of conventional gas-stabilized plasma torches (different chemistry, higher power, enthalpy, temperature and plasma velocity), which opens new experimental possibilities. Experiments will result in deposition of new types of functional coatings and widen understanding of fundamental physical mechanisms controlling their formation and properties. YSZ, TiO2, Al2O3, and their combinations were selected as model materials with potential use in thermal barriers, photocatalytical coatings, fuel cells, and medical applications.
