Failure processes of layered materials near phase boundaries

Aims of the project: Importance of components provided with layers of specific properties different from those of the substrate is increasing worldwide. Deposited surface layers serve as protective barriers (thermal, chemical, wear, ...) and facilitate more effective use of rare materials. Existence of so called phase boundaries (interfaces) resulting in misfit of materials properties may substantially influence applicability of the considered combination of materials, in particular, with respect to their fracture behavior during combined loading. Goal of this project is to develop methods for evaluation of general physical phenomena connected with failure processes of materials with distinctive phase boundaries at several scales (micro- and macro-) during mechanical loading and compare experiments with numerical models. Crack propagation will be studied and related to materials microstructure. Comparison of layered materials prepared by various methods (namely thermal spraying and sintering) and their characterization will enable generalization of results.
