Aims of the project: Thermal spraying is a progressive technology that enables preparation of surface layers and coatings or free-standing parts with specified properties. Mechanical properties of these materials are influenced by pores and microcracks, which are generated due to thermal processes during the deposition. Important role is also played by residual stresses, in the coating as well as in the substrate. Practical application of thermal spraying technology depends on the knowledge of the material response to mechanical loading. The proposed research project os focused on the study of failure processes in thermally sprayed materials during tensile and flexural loading. In selected types of coatings, stress states will be modelled by analytical and numerical methods. Based on the preliminary results, specimen preparation conditions for the experimental part will be determined. Extensive experimental program will be focused on static loading tests, fatigue tests and, prospectively, wear tests of relevant materials. Included in the experiments will be analysis of structural features of the coatings, substrate-coating interface characteristics, fractographic study of microscopic failure mechanisms and a detailed study of relationships between degradation processes and structural parameters of sprayed materials by microscopic observation of fracture „in situ“. The goal of the proposed project is to describe the failure mechanisms during mechanical loading in relation to structural parameters of thermally sprayed materials.
