Thermonuclear Fusion Research on the joint European tokamak JET in Culham, United Kingdom
|
Project ID: | LA08048 | Provider: | Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic | Period: | Jan 01, 2008 - Dec 31, 2010 | Principal Investigator: | Ing. Pavol Pavlo, CSc. | Co-investigators | I. Ďuran, M. Hron, V. Petržílka, J. Mlynář, J. Horáček, E. Havlíčková | Aims of the project: This project aims at investigation of selected problems in the field of thermonuclear fusion on the joint European tokamak JET in Culham, UK, in particular neutron data analysis, study of the direct ionization of the JET SOL plasma during LHCD and/or ICRH, characterization of the edge turbulence and exploitations of possibilities and perspectives of Hall sensors for magnetic measurements in the harsh tokamak environment. | Progress/Results: In the course of the project, about 20 missions of our staff to the JET tokamak have been realized which facilitated our direct involvement in the pan-European research conducted at JET. JET Collaboration is extremely extensive - during the duration of the project, it involved 979 scientists from 71 institutions (see EFDA JET Contributors, Appendix in Romanelli et al. Overview of JET Results, Nucl. Fusion 49 (2009) 104006 (22pp ) doi: 10.1088/0029-5515/49/10/104006). A number of new findings were published in prestigious journals and at major international conferences. Equally important was the involvement of young researchers who got the opportunity to acquire new skills while working in the world class establishment for European research on thermonuclear fusion.
Main scientific results achieved:
A. High quality, robust and fast software to solve inverse problems in the analysis of neutrons, with the potential to be used in the feedback control of plasma.
B. Predictive model of the Scrape-off Layer able to forecast the coupling between antenna and the plasma, and the thermal load of the tokamak walls in places magnetically connected to the antenna.
C. Expansion and validation of the ESEL numerical model which predicts the behavior of the edge plasma turbulence driven by interchange instability, in the presence of a strong pressure gradient and magnetic field.
D. Installation of a set of Hall sensors on the JET tokamak.
