Aims of the project: The project objective is to develop new nano- and ultrafine- grained materials from powders using ball-milling at room and cryogenic temperatures and pulsed electric current sintering (PECS). High strength and enhanced ductility aluminum alloys, titanium alloys and Fe-Al intermetallics will be manufactured utilizing these powder metallurgy techniques. Suppressing grain growth during PECS is critical for maintaining ultrafine grained microstructure in compact sintered materials. Additions of grain growth inhibitors are proposed for each studied material. Microstructure will be studied by advanced microscopic and diffraction techniques. Strength, ductility and possible superplastic behavior will be evaluated. Mechanical properties, microstructure, processing parameters and material composition will be mutually correlated.
