Evolution of ceramics coatings during plasma spraying process

Project ID: | GP106/04/P012 | Provider: | Czech Science Foundation | Period: | Jan 01, 2004 - Dec 31, 2006 | Principal Investigator: | Ing. Tomáš Chráska, Ph.D. | Aims of the project: Although plasma spraying (PS) has been widely used for several decades, understanding of all the physical and chemical processes involved is still limited. In the conventional PS process, powder particles injected into a high temperature plasma jet are quickly melted and propelled onto a substrate where they spread upon impact and rapidly solidify. The flattened and solidified particles are called splats and they represent the building blocks of a whole coating. The structure and properties of the splat/substrate interface control adhesion of the whole coating, whereas the splat/splat interface plays a very important role in determining the coating's overall cohesion and related properties. It is, therefore, very important to understand the processes governing the formation of first-to-form isolated splats on a substrate and the formation of subsequent splats on top of the previously solidified ones. Such an understanding will enable us to better comprehend the properties of the whole | Progress/Results: Summary of results achieved during the course of this project: Adhesion of plasma sprayed ceramic splats to smooth substrates kept at room temperature is severely limited due to the layer of air molecules adsorbed to the substrate independent of substrat | Results: | Chráska T., Neufuss K., Dubský J., Ctibor P., Rohan P.: Fabrication of bulk nanocrystalline alumina-zirconia materials.
