Aims of the project: We intend to reveal microscopic mechanisms in (sub)nanosecond timescales which are responsible for the formation of micro-plasmas in liquid water. We will explore discharge initiation phenomena starting from first generated electrons, their multiplication followed by formation of ionizing waves leading to the expansion of plasma filaments. We will employ techniques of time-resolved ICCD microscopy, optical emission, absorption and scattering techniques. We will reveal the dynamics of propagation, morphology and optical characteristics of the micro-discharges produced in deionized liquid water by applying fast-rising nanosecond HV pulses in a point-to-plane electrode geometry. In order to isolate influence of processes occurring due to the metal-liquid interface, we will study in parallel the discharge initiation induced by short laser pulse with comparable temporal and energetic characteristics. Experimental outcomes will be confronted with numerical simulations.
