Aims of the project: There are still several open issues related to the successful operation of future fusion devices (and ITER in particular). Within this project we aim to address two of these, namely: 1) role of the multi-scale physics in uncovering physics of the isotope effect in fusion plasmas, particularly in the L-H transition; 2) study of Alfvén eigenmodes (AE), which can have significant impact on fast particle confinement, and identification of their driving mechanism on COMPASS. We will study the role of multi-scale physics experimentally by comparing characteristics of the large scale Zonal Flows (ZF) and their high-frequency branch, Geodesic Acoustic Modes (GAMs) on one side and the local, micro-scale, turbulence characteristics on the other side. We will use the same diagnostic tools simultaneously for identification of possibly non-standard driving mechanism of AE on COMPASS. The joint effort in these areas, proper and deep characterization of both phenomena, may then shed light also on the possible interaction of ZF/GAMs and AE, recently suggested in theoretical works. Goals Characterize: * Zonal flows (ZF) on COMPASS * driving mechanism of Alfvén eigenmodes (AE) on COMPASS * isotope effect on ZF, local turbulence characteristics, and AE * AE and ZF interaction with fast particles and magnetic perturbations * mutual interaction of ZF, AE and sawtooth oscillations
