laser pulses and plasma streams

Project ID: | WP13-IPH-A01-P3-01 | Provider: | Euratom under European Fusion Development Agreement | Period: | Apr 01, 2013 - Dec 31, 2013 | Principal Investigator: | Ing. Jiří Matějíček, Ph.D. | Co-investigators | T. Chráska, V. Weinzettl, M. Vilémová | Aims of the project: This project is planned as a trilateral colaboration between Polish Association (IPPLM and WUT), ENEA and IPP.CR. The main objective is the investigation of the behavior of the surface of mixed plasma facing materials after interaction with laser pulses or plasma and ion streams. As samples, mainly mixed layers of W:Al:C with different deuterium content will be used. Al is meant as a substitute light metal for Be.
The samples will be exposed at IPPLM, using pulsed ns-laser systems and plasma accelerator of the PF type. In the latter, targets will be irradiated in deuterium (or deuterium + nitrogen) atmosphere with plasma/ion streams of adjustable energy density.
After irradiation, the samples will be characterized by a variety of analytical methods at WUT and IPP.CR.
At IPP.CR, these will be namely SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy), possibly also other characterization techniques complementary to those available at IPPLM and WUT.
The complex characterization will give information about the deposit thickness, its composition and structure after interaction with plasma and laser beams under different conditions (different deuterium pressure, various mixtures of deuterium and nitrogen, etc.).
Secondly, mixed layers of W:Al:/D, graphite with W coatings of different thickness and other ITER-relevant materials will be used for studies of fuel removal. Among the means for hydrogen isotope implantation, exposure to tokamak plasma (hydrogen or deuterium) at tokamak COMPASS will be used. After this, fuel removal by means of laser irradiation under different power densities and fluences will be performed. Parallel with the laser irradiation, optical spectroscopy (LIBS) and ion diagnostics (electrostatic ion energy analyzer) will be used, to confirm e.g. removal of deuterium/hydrogen; CCD camera will be used for tracking dust formation. These experiments will be performed at IPPLM within task WP13-IPH-A03-P2. Similar post-treatment characterization as mentioned previously will be performed at IPP.CR. | |
