Tungsten-Based Coatings for Plasma Facing Components of Fusion Reactors
|
Project ID: | TW5-TVM-PSW | Provider: | Euratom under European Fusion Development Agreement | Period: | Jan 01, 2005 - Dec 01, 2006 | Principal Investigator: | Ing. Jiří Matějíček, PhD. | Co-investigators | K. Neufuss | Aims of the project: For plasma facing components of fusion research devices, special materials are sought for. Since "single" materials (such as steels, special alloys, etc.) are often at the limits of their properties, new types of materials must be developed. These materials have to withstand high thermal fluxes and irradiation by neutral and ionized particles. One of the candidate materials is tungsten, mainly because of its high melting point and high threshold for sputtering. The underlying cooling system has to be able to remove high thermal power; for this, copper with its high thermal conductivity is advantageous. Plasma spraying offers itself as promising technology to produce tungsten plasma facing coatings as well as tungsten-copper composites and graded layers that will enable joining with the cooling system and minimize the interfacial thermal stresses.
Specific tasks of this project include:
- development and optimization of spraying technique for tungsten, especially regarding deposition efficiency, oxidation and porosity control
- optimization of spraying technique for tungsten+copper composites and their composition
- deposits characterization by SEM, XRD, and other techniques
- sample testing in Tokamak CASTOR and high heat flux facility JUDITH | Results: | Matějíček J., Chráska P., Linke J.: Thermal Spray Coatings for Fusion Applications — Review. Journal of Thermal Spray Technology 16 [1] (2007) 64-83. [ Abstract ] [ DOI ] |
