Aims of the project: In aerospace applications abradable coatings are used to control the over-tip leakage of air in the compressor between rotor blade and casings, labyrinth seals as well as drums and stators. Abradable seals allow the blade to cut a track but this has to be achieved with minimum wear. The abradable must not erode or auto-erode or sealing effectiveness is lost. To gain the combination of properties required, these are generally combustion or plasma sprayed to give a distribution of matrix, dislocator and porosity. The goal of this project was to gain a much better and more fundamental understanding of abradability and at the same time design and manufacture a new family of powder/coating structures. This goal is to be achieved by three concurrent efforts: modeling of the coating structure and properties and the abrasion process; development of novel compositions for spray powders and tapes; optimization of the spraying process. IPP's participation included spraying of abradable coatings by WSP, as one of alternative spraying technologies, and complex characterization of the coatings, including those prepared at partners' labs.
