New launchers of lower hybrid and electron Bernstein waves for heating and current drive in tokamaks

Aims of the project: An intensive search for a structure capable of direct launch of the electron Bernstein waves into the spherical tokamaks (NSTX - Princeton, Globus - St. Peterbug, MST - Madison) is being carried out. The quasi-optical grill suits well for a range of 15-3OGHz, because its diffracting elements - rods - are sufficiently robust even for these rather short wavelength waves. One of aims of this project is the development of a quasi-optical grill coupling code using the matrix of plasma surface impedance determined by direct finite element integration of full equations describing a propagation of electromagnetic waves in a warm tokamak plasma. Then we would like to design the optimized quasi-optical grills for NSTX and CASTOR tokamaks. The latter will beused for an experimental verification of direct launch of Bernstein waves into the plasma.
