Aims of the project: Despite the wide use of plasma spraying of metals and ceramics, the knowledge of the composition changes occurring during this process is not satisfactory. The elemental and phase compositions of plasma deposits often differ significantly from that offeedstock powders. In many cases, this may influence negatively the deposit properties. The aim of the submitted project is to investigate thoroughly the phenomena affecting the composition changes. In particular, selective evaporation of the moltenparticles flying in the plasma plume, surface reactions with the surrounding gaseous phase, convective motion of the melt within the particles, and solid-state phase transformations will be investigated. Two distinct stages of the spraying process willbe studied. At the in-flight stage the composition changes occur in the melt, whereas at the second stage, i.e. after the particle impact and solidification, the changes take place in the solid state. The aim of the project is not only to determine

Progress/Results: Influence of water stabilized plasma on composition of selected metallic and ceramic materials thermally sprayed by Water Stabilized Plasma Gun was studied. Both selective evaporation and oxidation of the reactive components as the origins of composition
